Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids which are important for general health. However, the body is unable to synthesise Omega-3, so it must come from the diet. Omega-3 is vital for normal growth and brain function, and everyone can benefit from the nutrient, so it's important to eat oily fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines at least twice a week. Here are just some of the health benefits women can enjoy courtesy of Omega-3.
Anti-Inflammatory
The anti-inflammatory properties of Omega-3 can help to prevent the onset of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and lupus, and alleviate some of the more distressing symptoms. Omega-3 strengthens the hair and encourages regrowth, so it can counteract the hair loss characteristic of lupus. As both RA and lupus affect significantly more women than men, this is an important health benefit of Omega-3.
Cancer fighting
People who eat a Mediterranean diet - which is high in Omega-3 - have a much lower incidence of cancer, and a significantly reduced death rate. Studies indicate that Omega-3 can slow the growth or tumours and may prevent some cancers - particularly breast and ovarian cancer. Although men can and do develop breast cancer, it's far more common in women.
Anti-aging
Omega-3 is important for cell repair and renewal, and, as the skin covers the whole body, there are a lot of cells to repair and renew. Omega-3 helps to keep the skin hydrated and healthy looking, so you look younger. It also prevents sagging, and helps maintain skin elasticity, which makes for a more youthful appearance.
The nails and hair can also benefit from Omega-3, and will continue to look strong and healthy as you grow older. Omega-3 is a beauty treatment from the inside!
The fertile years
Omega-3 can help with menstrual cramps due to their anti-inflammatory properties, and the presence of two compounds - DHA and EHA - which are known to reduce levels of some prostoglandins. Prostoglandins encourage uterine contractions and muscle spasms, which in their turn cause menstrual cramps.
Women who obtain enough Omega-3 are likely to be more fertile, and have less risk of premature birth or postnatal depression, as Omega-3 is excellent for growth and development and brain function. Nutrients from the mother pass to the fetus through the umbilical chord, so the benefits of Omega-3 contribute to proper development of the foetus in general, and the brain in particular.
The menopause
Japanese women eat a diet rich in fish - a great source of Omega-3,
