First of all....hello! Why would you want to drink while you're pregnant and risk the safety of your unborn child? It's not like they can tap on our tummy and say "Hey Mommy, that is making me sick"! I just feel that if you feel that you just can't go without a drink while you're pregnant, then you are not ready for a child. For example, when I got pregnant with my daughter, I was 20 years old and in my "party days!" I loved to get drunk with friends every weekend, but the second that test showed positive, my whole life was put on hold. I was going to have a baby. I mean, sure some people drink and smoke and their children turn out fine, and then again there are times that the mother may do everything right and still have an unhealthy baby. So I had to think about what was more important to me? Getting drunk and having a good time, or making sure I had a beautiful and healthy baby? Sure there is a difference in taking a few sips of champagne and getting totally smashed, but either way, that alcohol is harmful to the fetus. And then you have to think about the possible consequences of your actions. Take my aunt for another example. When she was pregnant with my third cousin, she decided that she was going to drink because she already had 2 healthy boys, so what would it hurt? Nine months of drinking later my cousin was born with Sotos Syndrome. He was mentally challenged all of his life, and even though he was a wonderful person inside and out, he never had the chance to be a normal kid because of his mother's choices. He never got to enjoy many simple pleasures of life, and didn't even have the chance to change that. The doctor's said he wouldn't live to be 20, and unfortunately they were right. My cousin passed away in the fall of 2006, and although we all miss him dearly, he is now in a better place that he can be just like everyone else for once in his life. No not everyone that drinks has a challenged child, but is that drink really worth it?
