I would like to discuss the breeding of lizards specifically. rather than reptiles generally. Although the points I will put forward are also applicable to reptiles generally. Mostly you will them to be common sense but I just want to put down in writing a few pointers that will get you in the right mind set moving forward.
There are a number of key factors in determining the perfect conditions for your lizard to breed successfully, all directly related to how you decide to manage your pet and its housing, temperature, feeding habits, cycle of daylight. In order to breed in the most effective way you must take into account all aspects. The following key points are not meant as a bible, just a little pointer in the right direction.
With regards to the natural habitat of a lizard, some will be used to the southern hemisphere summer and other to the northern hemisphere. If you have imported a reptile from abroad, a different hemisphere for example, it might take your new pet some time to adapt to the new conditions, climate, and cycles of daylight and night time. There are some species that need no time to adapt and can successfully breed as long as a suitable living area and food is supplied.
The environmental humidity for a lizard is extremely important. Determining from the outset the natural habitat your lizard originates from is paramount to attempting to give it the perfect home by replicating the humidity within its new, artificial home. If a lizard feels as much at home as it would in its natural habitat then the chances of reproduction taking place is at its maximum.
Another factor of importance is the living space for the reptile itself. Just like us humans don’t like to be overcrowded, it is the same for male lizards. In any terrarium, it is imperative that you do not house too many male lizards in one small living space.
Hibernation also comes into play, leaving you the task of monitoring the temperature and reducing to a suitable level during naturally hibernation periods and then raising again at the right time.
When going into the lifestyle choice of breeding reptiles you will have to find all of this information and then specific information relating to your pet. There are myriad information portals out there that you can use, from reptile forums to specific reptile enthusiasts around the world. You will be able to find the information you need with a little bit of research and dedication to your goal of breeding.
