To say that having a relationship with God is important is a gross understatement. There is more to our existence than what we perceive with our physical senses. God is spirit and as physical beings we are blind to the spiritual world.
People are given physical life at birth but flesh and blood cannot enter the kingdom of God. Our spirit must be given life which is referred to as being born again. Jesus explains this in the third chapter of John.
When the spirit is born it has to be nourished in order to grow. This nourishment comes from Scriptures and prayer which begins our journey in developing a relationship with God. But until our spirit is regenerated we can’t perceive spiritual things.
God is absolutely holy and does not hear the prayers of sinners. Since we are all sinners, this represents a huge problem for the entire human race. Through Satan, the first man (Adam) disobeyed God which separated the human race from its Creator but God promised to send a Redeemer to reconcile us.
The religious leaders during the time of Jesus’ ministry had no idea that God Himself would be the Redeemer. They expected a strong leader who would deliver them from the oppression of Rome and lead them to victory against their enemies. Those who accept the Son accept the One that sent Him. Those who don’t believe that Jesus is the only way to God are calling God a liar. (1Jn.5:9-12)
No one can enter the presence of the Father without Christ. God’s greatness and holiness go beyond human understanding. Any mortal who stands before God without the covering of Christ will be instantly incinerated, which is a picture of hell. Those that accept the atonement that Jesus made on the Cross yet do not abide in Him will bear no fruit and could be cast into outer darkness. “Depart from Me I never knew you.” (Mt.7:23)
So it is imperative that we seek a personal relationship with God which can only be accomplished through Jesus Christ the Redeemer. “No one comes to the Father but by Me.” (Jn.14:9)
Jesus is not a mere stepping stone to the Father. He is God. The Holy Spirit is God. God is a Trinity- a composite unity which is something our finite minds cannot understand. We shouldn’t be surprised that God’s essence goes beyond our comprehension. One should expect God to be greater than anything our mortal minds could grasp.
Jesus and the Father are one. "Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father." (Jn.14) This is a profound mystery.
