Medical studies have revealed that there are many health benefits associated with omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids can be obtained from consuming fish and other sea foods, nuts and seeds, avocados and leafy green vegetables.
Basically there are 3 types of omega-3 fatty acids, and they include alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is the type that is found in plant foods; and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are the long chain fatty acids that are found in animal foods. The human body is able to convert ALA into EPA and DHA when it is taken in the correct proportions with omega-6, and when the right enzymes are present in the body.
By consciously adding in more omega-3 fatty acids, and avoiding foods high in saturated and trans-fatty acids, the overall health of the body can be greatly improved.
Prevent Heart Disease
One of the main health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids is the ability to prevent heart disease. Some of the risk factors for heart disease are high cholesterol and high blood pressure, which cause the heart to work harder than normal. This eventually it leads to all kinds of heart and artery problems when not dealt with. Studies show that omega-3 fatty acids can help to lower both cholesterol levels and high blood pressure so that heart diseases can be avoided.
Anti-Inflammatory
Omega-3 fatty acids have been proven to be anti-inflammatory, which makes the acids beneficial in reducing the symptoms of arthritis and asthma.
Helps With Diabetes
Diabetics often have high levels of triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce these levels, and thereby help to reduce the symptoms, as well as reduce the risk for diabetes.
Protect Against Cancer
Studies show that omega-3s can also help to protect against certain types of cancers such as breast, colon and prostate cancers.
Strengthens Immune System
Diets rich in omega-3s have been shown to strengthen the immune system, which is essential in helping the body to ward off infections and common ailments such as the cold, fever and allergies.
Improves Mental Health
Studies also show that omega-3 fatty acids help to improve mental health. The fatty acids help to coat the brain, which essentially helps to protect it from toxins that contribute to Alzheimer’s, poor memory and learning disabilities.
In addition, the omega-3 acids help the brain to utilize serotonin more effectively, which aids in depression, stress and anxiety.
Baby Development and Growth
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential in the development and growth of a baby, as they help to form the cells in the brain, eyes and the nervous system.
Studies show that increasing the intake of omega-3 fatty acids, even if only in small amounts can have a positive effect on the body.
