There has recently been an increased interest in the role of Omega-3 fatty acids upon the health, their benefits and where to get them from. Interest has taken form from numerous research and studies into the benefits of these essential fatty acids that must be ingested as the human body cannot produce them and general public interest into the benefits of and the reading of magazine articles writing upon the topic.
• What are Omega-3 fatty acids?
Omega-3 fatty acids are long chains of polyunsaturated fatty acids (18-22 carbon atoms in length). [i] Omega-3 fatty acid (Alpha-linolenic acid) is an essential fatty acid that plays an important role in brain function and may aid in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association recommends a diet in which fatty fish, like salmon, herring, sardines and tuna are consumed at least twice a week.[ii]
There are fatty acids found in a variety of foods not just fish, and are essential to brain health amongst other areas. Some examples of foods that contain heart-healthy Omega-3s are: cold water fish such as cod, mackerel, tuna, salmon, sardines, flax seeds and oil, hemp seed oil, Brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds and fish supplements amongst other food sources.
• The benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids
Numerous studies and research have taken place to discover the overwhelming benefits Omega-3s have upon the health. However, some specific benefits to the health are outlined below:
Protection against cardiovascular disease
Many studies have shown that getting enough DHA and EPA (the beneficial parts of Omega-3s found especially in fatty fish sources) can protect against cardiovascular disease by lowering the amount of triglycerides (fat in the blood) and raising the levels of HDL (good cholesterol).[iii]
Improves Memory and brain function
Many studies have been carried out to conclude that Omega-3s stimulate memory and the ability to learn and are essential to brain development and growth.
Dr Alex Richardson, a senior research fellow in physiology at Mansfield College, University of Oxford and Madeleine Portwood conducted a study in the UK called the Durham trial. More than100 children were selected and required to take a course of Omega-3 capsules with their meals for six months. The capsules given to children in the trial contained oils high in Omega-3 fats. The results showed a significant improvement in school performance. [iv]
Improves skin and hair health
Omega-3s provide essential components for healthy skin and hair, protection and suppleness. Doctors recommend those suffering with conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and flaky dry skin to take Omega-3s, either in the form of fish supplements or by eating foods rich in Omega-3s.
A study from the British Journal of Dermatology found fish oils were more effective at treating psoriasis than conventional treatment. Researchers gave ten patients 12 grams/day of Omega-3s for at least six weeks. Eighty per cent of these patients experienced improvements with less scaling and reduced redness. [v]
These are just some of the benefits that can be obtained from taking Omega-3s. They are essential to the body as the body cannot produce them, they must be taken either from rich Omega-3 food sources such as fatty fish, various seeds and nuts or from good quality fish supplements. The increased interest into these essential fatty acids has produced much research and numerous study results to conclude and confirm the numerous benefits for all-over good health and well-being, and the lowering of bad (HDL) cholesterol in the body.
