It's sometimes hard for a child not to get carried away with the " I want " element to Christmas, what with all the advertisements on the television at this time of the year and their friends telling them what they have asked Santa for it' can get to the point where a child just go's on and on about their Christmas list and what they want, this can get tedious for parents sometimes during the leading days up to Christmas as it breeds greed and want in our children which is not a good thing to see in your child and it is up to us as parents and relatives to put back some of the caring and giving to this time of the year.
Getting a child to take part in choosing the presents is a good thing to do at Christmas time, it gives them a sense of being where they can learn to give. Helping a child to write a Christmas present list for their friends and family is a good thing to encourage and if they want to give a present to a family member then suggesting that they make a present, giving them the incentive to lovingly make a present for someone.
When we were small we used to make all our presents for our aunties and uncles and we would make a tea cosy and do embroidery, we also used to get a little bar of soap and some pipe cleaners and some white material netting and twist the pipe cleaner into the front of the soap for a swans head and then stick a piece of the white netting to the top of the soap bar for the wings and give this as a present.
Making presents is a great way of teaching a child to care and put love into a present as well as thinking about who they want to give a present too, instead of centering the whole Christmas theme on what they want. Buying the children games too also helps them to learn to share their toys as a game needs more than one player and there are so many great board games out there to play and share with others..
I think it's important to teach a child about the values of giving and not receiving as it helps them to socialise in the later years.
