Interactive video conferencing with Skype has opened up a whole new communication facility which brings people closer together. The use of this technology is simple and takes a few minutes to set up, and, what is more, it is free!
It is advisable to have as high a speed broadband as is possible, as the narrower the bandwidth, the less effective the video link will be. A minimum of 500kps is advisable, but to achieve a good image without sound and movement delay, it is advisable to use 1mgps and upwards. A user can use whatever they have available however, that is if they don't mind picture quality variation and sound delay during busy times.
Hardware needed includes a broadband Internet connection, access to a laptop or desktop, and of course a PC Camera, or Web cam as they are called. Some laptops have Web cams built in, but if you haven't one of these then a Web cam may be purchased for a few dollars/pounds/euros. Some advice here; don't go for the cheapest! Very often Skype chats take place at night, and a good camera must have the capacity to work in artificial light conditions
The first small job is to log onto the Skype website and download the program. Follow the instructions to install. After installation you will be asked a number of relevant questions, including Skype's promotion of cheaper telephone rates. There is no need to sign up for this if not needed.
Your next consideration is your log in name and password. Both of these are important, because it is your log in name that is needed by anyone searching for you and eventually contacting you. Try and be original if your own name is already taken. Skype will suggest if you have a problem. Remember, there are millions who use Skype, so don't be surprised if finding an original call name takes a little while. Write down your password and keep it in a secure place which will not be lost in time. If you are a regular user, your password will be retained, but if you only talk to granny every twelve months, then it is advisable to have your passowrd safely stored, as you will never remember it. Play safe, and write it down!
If your computer has a built in Web cam, then the downloaded software will detect the camera. It is possible to check the system is working by clicking on to the canmera menu heading and following the simple instructions.
