Would Jesus be allowed to preach in the church today

by Wayne Leon Learmond

Created on: December 14, 2010

Christ was reviled in the past. During the times when He walked, and spoke, He was looked upon as a madman, a deceiver, a manipulator of the people, He was spat at, kicked, cursed and laughed at. Those who were the supposed 'learned' in the Sanhedrin - the Jewish priests and Pharisees of that time - challenged His authority and were shocked when He called Himself the Son of God.

But have things changed now? If Christ were walking this earth today, at this point in time, it would be a case of history repeating itself. He would be mocked, laughed at, looked upon even as a danger to peace. He would be looked upon as a rabble rouser, a trouble causer and there would be people out to kill Him.

Society would try to set Him up in order to knock Him down and the Church, would try and silence Him in their own way. The one thing, throughout history that the Church has always been very good in doing - is ignoring the evidence before them. Christ would not be allowed to preach in the Church today, for the simple reason in that He would be outspoken on so many things.

He would embarrass the Church and her leaders to such an extent, that they would try to bar Him from speaking within any church at all. He would continually speak out against the injustices of the Church and her leaders, challenging the Pope, himself to explain the many sins of the church - including the child abuse scandals.

Jesus would indeed, be a hated figure among many.  He would also be a leading target for assassination from many organisations who He would have embarrassed. There would be many who would try to silence Him, and there would be many who would fail in that attempt.

Yet the church itself would have to face up to the stark choice of allowing Jesus to speak within the church - therefore allowing Him to create some kind of religious movement, based on patience, fairness, and above all, love - or they would have to face up to the fact that this one man could bring their whole institution crashing down around their ears.

Christ would most certainly not be allowed to preach, for fear of the following He would attract. As in any walk of life, any business, there are people within the Church who would cling onto power, no matter what. And they would do anything to keep their positions of power. The Status Quo must be seen to be protected and upheld by those who are its keepers.

So comparing the times of Christ when He lived, preached, performed miracles, and died on the cross, to today...and no, nothing would have really changed. The State - as in the times of Christ - would see to it that nothing changes and that Jesus remains silent..
