All This and More
Jack led Pam, his college girlfriend for the past school year, into his parents’ house. “You’ll like it here,” he said. “It’s the least I can do for you.”
A terrier walked up to her and licked her hand. “He’ll bark and let you know when someone’s coming.”
He led her to another room. A parakeet flew from its cage and landed on her shoulder. “This is Pete, he’ll talk to you.”
He led her to another room, where a carrier pigeon was perched on its roost. “This is Homer, and he’ll fly any message you may have back to town.”
When outside, a rooster strutted up to her, and crowed. “This is Horatio, and he’ll wake you up each morning.”
She giggled.
He led her past an oak tree, where an owl hooted. “This is Oliver, and he’ll give you wisdom.”
They passed a pond, where a trout leaped up into the air. They walked to an orchard, where he picked an apple for her. “You can’t live on fish alone,” he said, and he pointed past the grove to a field of wheat. “You can also have bread."
“You sure have a lot out here,” she said.
He smiled at her. “Some day, all of this will be mine.”
"Do you bring all your friends out here?"
"No, just you."
He held her hand. “We’ve done so many things together at school. I thought I’d share this with you, too.” He pointed at a vast expanse of land. “This summer, I’m sharing all of this with you, and more.”
