Is religion the root of all evil? I say yes for the most part. If you look back through time almost every war was in some how connected to religious beliefs. Most national disagreements stem from some sort of cultural or religious difference or misunderstanding. Just to mention some of the types of crimes that where committed or are being committed which have religious undertones, the Jew's in World War 2, the Christian's by the Romans, the Muslims by the European Kings during the Crusades and probably the most famous religious problem at present the Muslims World against Israel.
Back in those days when the Human race could not understand or figure out why certain catastrophes happened, religion was created to explain the unexplainable. The ancient past when all major religions where established all feel in the period when people did not have the knowledge to see that there where reasons why Volcano's erupted, and the Earth shook. The strength of your faith in a god or many gods was the only way you could be safe back then in their eyes. This faith was passed down through generations and is still being passed down today. These strong beliefs where not excepting or tolerant of other belief systems no matter what they may claim or preach to others. Most people who believe in a god would not go as far as to hurt another person for their beliefs, but there are many radicals living within all religions that would hurt or would kill for their god.
Religion though it preaches the difference between good and bad also teaches the penalty for having a lack of faith that has been ingrained in the heads of its follower since they where began. This penalty of not reaching a heaven upon death or being punished harshly for not following the rules of your particular faith has been able to even today keep the sheep at bey. The atrocities committed for religious fervor are not kind and have no care for its victim's. These victim's no matter what religion they believe in have families that carry the hatred even further and the cycle begins again. Religion can be a great way to learn peace if that is all it taught, but this is not the case. This is why my answer to this question has to be yes even though I believe myself.
