When the temperatures begin to drop, it is time to close your in ground pool. Closing the pool for the season is not difficult, but it is time consuming, culminating in the installation of the winter pool cover.
Since placing the winter pool cover is last, be sure to complete these pool closing tasks first:
1. Remove and store diving boards, ladders, steps, flotation devices, and toys.
2. Clean the pool of debris and algae followed by brushing down the sides and floor. Finish with vacuuming the debris.
3. Add the winterizing chemicals according to the manufacturer’s directions.
4. Winterize the pool plumbing systems and disconnect the pump and filter systems.
Once the basic winterizing process is complete, it is time to install the winter pool cover.
Pool covers come in a variety of styles: a solid vinyl cover, a solid safety cover, or a mesh safety cover. Pool covers can be custom made to fit your pool or they come in standard sizes. Installation usually requires at least two people.
Installing a Solid Vinyl Pool Cover
A solid vinyl pool cover keeps debris, dirt, and light out of the pool. It is held in place by tube bags filled with water and inserted into loops sewn into the cover. In the spring, it will deter algae buildup as temperatures rise with the increased hours of sunlight.
To install, first lay out the cover evenly over the top of the pool so that it lies on the water, but has enough overlap around the sides to hold it in place. Anchor the corners with a heavy object to stabilize the cover while you place the water bags. Place the empty water bags in the loops around the perimeter of the pool, end to end forming a border around the pool. This prevents wind from lifting up the cover. Fill each water bag with a hose, leaving some head room to allow for expansion during freezing.
A good submersible pump to drain water off the pool cover is essential. As snow melts or in periods of heavy rainfall, the pool cover becomes very heavy. Draining the water prevents the weight from tearing or stretching the pool cover. A weighted down pool cover displaces the water in the pool and can be pulled into the pool, along with any debris on top.
Installing a Safety Pool Cover
In areas where there are large snowfalls, it makes sense to purchase a safety pool cover made of a polypropylene mesh. This
