Whether it be dressing up for a formal event or dressing down for everyday, it’s sometimes difficult to judge which type of neckline is best suited for a particular style of necklace; or vice versa.  Fortunately necklaces come in a variety of sizes, shapes and styles which can be mixed and matched to compliment your neckline and flatter your entire silhouette.  Here are a few examples of the more popular and classic choices in necklace styles.

Collar Necklaces are generally 12-13 inches in length and are usually designed with three or more strands that lie snugly along the centre part of the neck.  This type of style is very elegant and Victorian in nature.  Necklines that best compliment this chic style include; the v-neck, off-the-shoulder and boat-neck designs.

The most classical and practical out of all the single length necklaces is the Choker.  Its standard length is usually 14-16 inches and can be worn with just about any outfit and neckline.  Whether you are dressed in casual attire, or dressy eveningwear, the simple choker is a staple of every woman’s wardrobe.

The Princess Necklace is best paired with crewnecks and other high neck styles, such as; the turtleneck and tunnel-neck.  Low, plunging necklines are also complimented by its simple, yet elegant style.  The Princess measures 17-19 inches and is the ideal necklace to use for hanging a pendant.

The Matinee is the perfect necklace for casual or business dressing.  When worn with professional attire, it adds a touch of style and sophistication.  Long, flowing sundresses and formal gowns also look chic with this necklace length.  It measures approximately 20-24 inches in length.  Its versatility in style and length is what makes this mid-length necklace perfect for virtually any neckline.

The Opera Necklace is the queen of all necklace lengths.  Measuring approximately 28-34 inches, it’s widely recognized as the most common necklace length.  This classic beauty is considered to the toast of the town when it comes to style and elegance.  It makes the perfect partner for crew, or high necklines.  To create a stylish, vintage look, try knotting it at the neckline or above the bust.

Finally for any woman who strives for versatility in their wardrobe, the Pearl Rope Necklace is a must.  Its practical, long length of 37 inches (or longer) also makes it easy for it to be tied into a stylish knot. This elegant piece exudes rich beauty and deep sensuality.  Its chic style made it a favorite of Coco Chanel, and its versatility has made this piece a true classic.  With clasps that are placed strategically around the necklace, it allows you to create a multitude of different necklace and bracelet combinations so you can easily change your look.
