As a mother of three young children, you would think I would be an expert on this topic. I think that I am the type of mother, who cannot stand huge messes, and bored kids. I have spent thousands of dollars on expensive toys that my kids don't even touch, let alone think about. My daughter actually asked me for a toy that she saw on a commercial the other day, and I had just boughten her that same doll not a month before. We aren't talking some "cheap" doll, we are talking an expensive one that pees and eats...anyway, back to my original thought...Rainy Day activities, well my point is, that it's easy to entertain them with just some fun stuff you have around the house. This is geared towards young children, as I feel they are the hardest to entertain.
I make an elbow macaroni sandbox for my kids, and put it right in the middle of the kitchen floor. I take a few boxes, and they are real cheap, and pour them into a large roasting pan, and just give them some spoons and measuring cups and they are set. Just keep them right in the kitchen and you can just sweep it up when they are done. Sometimes I put the cover on it, and just put them up and bring it out another day. This is particularly good for my kids, because they are mixed, so I really hate them playing in regular sandboxes, because it is especially hard to get the sand out of their type of hair. So this way, they are not really missing out, because they have their own.
If you wanna get a little messier, and tastier, I have a really fun thing, and this is good for babies, through about 3 or 4 years old. You can put them in their high chairs, and take strawberry &/or chocolate syrup, and put some on their tray, and just let them finger paint the tray. Be prepared to give a bath after this though. It's great because they can learn about colors, tastes, and textures, and you don't have to worry if they eat it, because its pretty darn tasty.
Another thing that I love to do with my kids is clean. They love helping me out. I give them each a spray bottle with water, and a rag, and they go around the house cleaning just about everything, and having the time of their lives.
