The Christmas Tree Ornament
"Dad's Home," Casey said looking out the window, "and he’s got the tree."
"Let’s go help him," his sister Amber said.
Bill, their father, pulled the tree out of the trunk and carried it into the garage.
"It’s a pretty tree," Amber said. "Mom is going to like it."
"I hope so. It was expensive." He said standing it upright.
"What kind of tree is it?" Casey asked. "It sure smells piney."
"It’s a blue spruce," his father answered. "Bring me that tree stand over there would you Casey?"
After putting the tree in the stand, he carried it into the house and set it up in the corner of the living room. They started to unpack the boxes of lights and ornaments. Using the small stepladder their father strung the lights around the tree then plugged it in. All the lights were working this year.
"Casey, would you go get me a big glass of water? We need to give the tree water or it will lose its needles before Christmas."
Casey returned with the glass and crawled under the tree to fill the reservoir for his father.
"Okay kids, I’ll put on some Christmas music." he said turning to them. "Let’s decorate this tree before mom gets home from work."
They opened all the boxes and carefully took out the globes that were neatly rapped in tissue paper and began to hang them on the tree. Amber stood on the stepladder and Casey handed them up to her.
"Be careful Casey, we don’t want to break any." Bill said watching them.
"Okay, I will, " Casey said.
The tree began to sparkle and shine from all the tinsel and ornaments that adorned it. Casey had one of the candy canes in his mouth.
"You’re supposed to hang those candy canes on the tree," Amber said shaking her head.
"It’s just a broken one." he answered. "I didn’t want to let it go to waste."
Bill mounted the angel on the top and it was just about finished except for some more tinsel.
"What’s in this old wooden box?" Casey said pulling it out of the big cardboard box it was in.
"Oh, be extra careful of that. It’s mom’s special glass ornament with all the little angels inside. Her great-grandmother brought it over from Holland a long time ago," Bill said.
"Hang it over there on the front side by that blue light right there," Amber said pointing.
Casey took it out of the box and carefully removed the cotton padding it was wrapped in. He hooked it on the branch and stood back to look. The hook came loose and it fell to the floor splintering
