Every society has values, just as every person has their own values. Every value affects who we are, how we connect to others, and how we react to the world around us. Due to the importance that values hold in human society, history has presented many ideas on what these values should be. There was a time where children were not to be constantly shown affection, as this would lead to them being dependent on their parent and therefore unfit for an adult life.
People in the middle ages believed that plagues were God's form of wrath, punishing human beings for their failures. Even in modern society, racial tensions have led to values either supporting or discriminating against various races and creeds. Fortunately, each of these beliefs has yielded the desire to research them, and therefore insights into reality have been formed. It has been proven that children, when they are ignored by their parent, develop mental disabilities. If was discovered to be microbes, not God or Gods, that killed so many during the Black Death. In the sixties, it was found African-Americans could be strong enough to fight for their rights, and their intelligence was equal to that of white men and women. All races and sexes have been found to be nothing but human. What is the lesson to be learned from the beliefs and values here that have been discredited? It is that each one one of these values has been incorrect because they do the opposite of what human beings need to do to help each other; they do not support nor encourage all human beings.
Human beings are creatures that need encouragement and support to thrive. It is ironic that children were supposed to be emotionally detached from their parent when natural instinct tells most mothers to have a full connection with their child. It is ironic that the clergy would tell the population they were being punished by God for their evil deeds during the Black Death, when the clergy were the most corrupt leaders of the time. It is ironic, also, that race can be such a large issue among adults, but in the classroom children play as though they were all the same race. It seems nature supports different value sets than many of us human beings hold.
If we look around us, there is less support and encouragement than we realize. The public education system, as well as private ones, generally grade to the test. Many cultures, even that of countries
