Blogging is an increasingly popular means of earning income for people from all walks of life, although can be daunting to those just starting out.
Many blogs fail to produce the levels of income their writers aim for, which is usually down to either poor topic choice or lack of knowledge on the writer's part on advertising and marketing. Fortunately though with the right topic, planning and research, blogging can be a relatively easy way to make at least a side income.
Perhaps the most important factor in determining the eventual value of a blog is the topic that the content in centered on. Generally there are two schools of thought on the best way to attract interest and therefore generate income, the first being to choose a popular subject that naturally attracts a lot of attention.
This could be something such as celebrity gossip or sports, that has an inbuilt group of users who are already interested in the content offered. The drawback though is that these topics are invariably already well covered by more established writers and sites, meaning getting noticed regularly can be a problem unless a blog provides unique or exclusive content.
The second method is to choose a niche topic that has moderate interest but much less coverage by the mainstream media, meaning that being noticed is a lot easier, as is attracting regular readers. Unless the blog has unique content or breaking news, this method tends to be the easier way of making a profitable blog for those just starting out.
Regardless of which method is used however, regular content updates, as well as mutual linking to blogs containing similar content are both effective ways of increasing traffic. Similarly, the use of traffic generating communities, and posting links to articles in appropriate locations on the web can also generate substantial traffic.
Advertising is an essential part of most blogs, and which provider a writer chooses can mean the difference between making a considerable amount every month and nothing at all.
The simplest and most widely used service for advertisements is Google Adsense, which works by assigning adverts related to the topic matter and pays a percentage of the earnings that the individual adverts make, usually through clicks from readers. The only downside of these being that they are assigned a certain amount of money from the sellers per month, and once it is used up, the ads are pulled from use.
Other methods include the use of pay per view
