Bee sting: The dangers

by Dr Nash

Bees belong to a family of insects called Hymenoptera. Their sting is composed of various molecules like melittin, phospholipase and kinins. A stung individual can have only local skin reactions like swelling , itching , pain and would need cold compress, local steroids to treat it. An non-allergic individual is generally safe because the amount of stings needed to cause death is more than 1300. But in a non-allergic individual even a single sting can cause multi-system compromise. The symptoms consist of breathlessness with wheeze, choking, swallowing difficulty, massive itch and skin swellings(hives), palpitations and faintness. Immediate medical attention is necessary.
Although it is difficult to predict who will get a major reaction, if it has happened once to anybody who managed to survived, he/she should consult a Doctor(medicine or skin or allergy doctor). Adrenaline(a lifesaving medication for severe allergic reaction like an anaphylaxis) shots are easily available to be carried along and they are life saving in such conditions.
