There are many things that teachers should avoid in order to keep a disciplined classroom that is conducive to learning. It is very important that teachers refrain from certain actions so that their classroom is one where students feel comfortable and free to learn. Educating young people is perhaps one of the most important and challenging jobs. Here are 10 elements and/or situations teachers should refrain from:
1) Disorganization
Organization is a must for any teacher, no matter the subject or grade being taught. A chaotic classroom does not provide an environment that promotes learning. Instead, a disorganized classroom portrays to the students that the teacher is not in control of the situation. It also portrays that the teacher obviously does not care about teaching enough to take the time and get the classroom ready. It is a bad example to set. A teacher needs to be able to stay on top of things and disorgainization makes that difficult. Being organized will ensure order in the classroom.
2) Tardiness
If teachers expect their students to be on time to class, then the teacher should be the one setting the example. Showing up late is not only unprofessional, it also portrays to the students a sense of disarray. Being on time is very important, especially for the person leading the classroom!
3) Unprofessional attire
Once again, teachers need to set the example. It is very important for teachers to always wear proper and professional attire. If a teacher shows up to teach dressed like the students he/she is trying to teach, the respect and authority of that teacher is diminished. Teachers should dress properly at all times. It also should be noted that not only should teachers not dress like their students, but female teachers should also be careful not to wear anything too revealing, such as a skirt or dress that is too short or a shirt that shows too much cleavage. Likewise, a male teacher should refrain from wearing pants or slacks that are too tight.
4) Lack of confidence
Whether it be elementary or high school, young people are able to pick up immediately on a teacher who is not confident about what he or she is teaching. When a teacher looks or acts unsure, their credibility is lost.
