Starting university for the first time can seem like a daunting task and you may find yourself with many questions about what to expect or what items you need to take along with you. Below we will look at some supplies which you are almost guaranteed to need when studying a course at university level.
* Stationary – Now you may plan on taking notes on a laptop or netbook, however some professors or lecturers may prefer you to take notes on paper so you should be sure to have some stationary available. Pens, pencils, highlighters, rulers, binders, folders and paper should do you fine for the most part, but you may also find a use for a stapler and a hole punch down the line.
* Laptop or Netbook – As mentioned above you may want to take notes on a laptop or netbook and either of these devices will also come in handy for any research that you need to complete. You should definitely purchase a portable computer as you will be required to type and print quite a few reports during your time at university, but a laptop also gives you the freedom to study anywhere you want. It will also provide you with a new way to stay in touch with family and old friends.
* Hardware or Software – You may find that you need to purchase Microsoft Office if you don't have a word processing program or a way to make presentations. Many laptops will come with a version of Microsoft Office already installed but you can find a copy at most computer stores and many will accept student discounts. Another useful investment would also be a small printer which you can use to print out your notes and reports. This isn’t essential as you will be able to find multiple printers on campus, however expect to be charged anywhere between $0.10 - $0.50 for a copy.
* Textbooks – Before you rush out and purchase all of the books related to your course you should speak to a course representative at your university, as they will often provide you with a booklist. This list will contain a range of books, some will be compulsory and others will be optional depending on your skill and confidence in the subject. It is recommended that you purchase all of the required books as a lot of the tasks you will be given will be referenced from a textbook.
* Bag – A comfortable bag which is large enough to carry several books and folders is a must for your studies. Messenger bags are becoming increasingly popular and will allow you to carry your stationary, books and laptop, whilst still providing space for a lunchbox. Purchasing a bag is especially important if you live a fair way away from your education provider.
These are a selection of the most important and valuable supplies which you will need whilst studying for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree. If you are still unsure of which supplies to purchase then contact your university for more information about the course and what is required.
