If you suffer from dry skin you will know only too well, how uncomfortable and irritating this condition can be. The changes in weather can exacerbate this, with hot weather having a drying effect on skin whilst cold weather causing sensitivity, itching and flaking skin.
Below you will find some helpful tips to deal with the issues of dry skin for men, which may help to alleviate some of the irritating symptoms this condition can cause.
Washing/Showering
One thing that is certain to dry skin out, and cause irritation is soap. Men like to use soap, they like the feel that it makes their skin really clean, but soap is one of the main culprits in drying the skin. It contains drying irritants that leave the skin tight and can cause itching. This can be alleviated by replacing soap with a creamy body wash or shower gel, which contains moisturisers. This will clean the skin without drying it. The moisturisers will keep the skin from flaking and will feel more comfortable.
Moisturising
All skin needs a good drink, and this is what moisturiser does, it feeds the skin with moisture. This will protect the skin from the elements as well as keeping it comfortable and smooth. There are some good moisturisers on the market aimed specifically at men; the more natural the product the less chance that it will irritate your skin.
Moisturising Shaving Gel
There are now shaving gels/foam for sensitive skin, this type of product will be good for sufferers of dry skin. Products for sensitive skin tend to have less irritants in them, which can help skin which lacks moisture. Men shave almost every day, so a good moisturising shaving gel is a must. Follow this with a moisturiser which contains an SPF factor to protect your skin from the sun and wind, which are very drying to this condition.
Scalp
People suffering from dry skin usually suffer from flaky, dry scalps too. Counteract this by using a mild, moisturising shampoo and conditioner. For particularly irritated scalps there are scalp applications available on prescription from your Doctor.
Diet
Eating a healthy balanced diet containing plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and protein may help maintain a good immune system and can aid good digestion and elimination which can help keep skin in good condition.
Supplements
Taking a supplement containing Vitamins, Minerals and Essential Fatty Acids may help to alleviate dry skin conditions, where the cause may be linked to an inadequate diet.
Water
It's really important to drink at least 8 glasses of fresh water every day. Water hydrates the body from the inside, helping to flush the kidneys and gets rid of any toxins. It hydrates our skin, brain and organs and is a great all over tonic.
Following some of the above suggestions may help to hydrate the skin and prevent it becoming itchy, dry and irritated. A good moisturising cream can help to protect skin from the harsh conditions of winter weather and central heating not to mention the added bonus of great looking skin.
