Why the Internet is killing print journalism

Today there is a wealth of knowledge at our fingertips and without too much effort one can become informed on just about anything happening in the world. The Internet is leading the way in the civilized world of new information and world news. Yesterday it once was that a boy stood on the corner of downtown at a major street intersection selling a hardcopy newspaper for pennies on the dollar for a copy. Today all you have to do is wake up, look at your cell phone, go to your Internet application and see what’s happening in today’s world.  



The Internet just became the fastest, easiest and most simple way to get the news. People could log onto a computer, their own computer, and get the daily news and not just for their city but the world. A person can even pick a news website without it costing a dime, let alone two quarters, the typical price of a newspaper today. The Internet is a fast streaming media form; much like the television it was constant, consistent and readily available.

The newspaper is cost inefficient, not to mention it can be very time consuming. It takes many, many people to make a newspaper to work. The newspaper needs press managers, press technicians and distributors, not to mention journalists. Now it is true that though the Internet still requires people to maintain the Internet news, it requires much less than the hardcopy newspaper business. The price of producing a newspaper is enormous, compared to publishing the news online. Eco-friendliness is just an understatement, when you begin to realize that a newspaper requires much more power and resources to make than an online news website, especially today since paper comes from wood, and wood isn’t exactly cheap anymore.

Most news companies realize that unlike the daily hardcopy newspaper, the Internet serves to be a constant and easily updatable news information hub. So, when the hardcopy newspaper is published for that day and then released to the public, attempting or even thinking about trying to get the latest “big news” of the day, just isn’t possible. However the Internet with open arms allows the news agency to publish, the “big news,” with much less effort or trouble. Even the slightest news of day can be changed or updated on the website.

On the part of the news recipient or the public in general, there were many ways to receive the news but many were frustrating. The most common form of newspaper hardcopy was sent to your doorstep. This form could really make a possibly good day go bad; for example, the guy walking out his door to get the newspaper only to find that it fell in the gutter. What a delight a soaking, leafy and dirty newspaper. This never happens with the Internet form of news and if it does it’s something very, very rare, let’s just say physically impossible. Or maybe that one day the newspaper doesn’t come to his doorstep because well, they missed his home. Now with the news online, although the news website he’s looking for maybe down, he can find another news website, so the possibility of not getting any news is very unlikely.
We live in a new era of technology, many forms of news that were once used back in history are not worth our, or the industries, time, money or resources. The Internet takes a new approach to getting the news to its readers, via a higher caliber form of media channel; The Internet. And honestly most people would say that trying to use the old forms of print or hard copy news is just not realistic.
