Making a knitting needle holder has never been so simple. Knitting needles are unwieldy objects that tend to end up poking unwanted holes into our knitting bags. It is far easier to make a holder in which to store all of the knitting needles that you are not using. Knitting is now considered to be a fashionable hobby so choose some trendy vintage fabric to make your knitting needle holder.

All kinds of knitting wool, knitting patterns and knitting accessories are available to buy in on-line stores. Look around these stores and you will be amazed at the amount of up to date knitting patterns that are available. Vintage fabric is all the rage and a remnant of vintage fabric can make you a super holder for your knitting needles. If you trying to source a remnant of vintage fabric or a length of pretty cotton fabric then take a look on e bay. A metre should be ample to make you a decent sized knitting needle holder.

The average sized knitting needle is just over twelve inches long. You are going to construct a flat fabric holder that will hold your knitting needles and roll up so that it will fit into your knitting bag. If you want the holder to hold twelve pairs of knitting needles then you will make sufficient slots when you machine the fabric.

First of all you are going to cut out two pieces of fabric the same size. The knitting needles are just over a foot long so cut two lengths of fabric that are 26 inches long (and at least 15 inches wide). This will allow the back of the knitting needle holder to be twelve inches long. The front of the holder will fold up for eight inches against the back and the remaining six inches allows for the hems.

Place the two pieces of fabric together so that the pattern on both pieces is facing inwards. Using your sewing machine make a hem around the outside of the two pieces of fabric, leaving about three inches unsewn so that you can turn the fabric back to the right side. When you have finished machining the two pieces of fabric together you will have the base for your knitting needle holder. Turn the fabric to the right side and push the corners out using the tip of a knitting needle. Then take a needle and thread and carefully sew up the opening which you used to turn the material.

At this stage your knitting needle holder will resemble a wide rectangular piece of fabric. Now you are going to fold some of the length of fabric up (the holder will look a little like a large envelope). Tack the sides into place to keep the fabric firm while you machine it. Allowing a good inch for every knitting needle slot run rows of machine stitch from the top to the bottom of the knitting needle holder. When you have finished you will have lots of individual compartments that will all accommodate one pair of knitting needles.

When you have reached this stage then all you have to do is to sew a length of tape to the outside of the knitting needle holder. When the holder is rolled up the length of tape will secure it into place.
