Burlesque is about a small town girl played by Christina Aguilera who moves to LA in search of fame. A far too familiar story- line, but the delivery is top notch. Cher is the owner of a small, nearly bankrupt burlesque club that is revived when Christina Aguilera is hired as a burlesque dancer and singer. Her bellowing voice and sexy stage performances draws in the crowds.
Cher who is a singer in her own right performs two songs, “Welcome To Burlesque” at the beginning of the show, and later, “You haven’t seen the last of me”. The rest of the songs were by Christina. Her first is “Something’s Got a Hold on Me” which she sings while considering to leave home to move to the unknown where she knows no one and start a new life as a performer in LA. Some of the best performances was “But I’m a Good Girl”, and “Show Me How You Burlesque”.
This movie delivers the music with the seductive appeal of burlesque. Burlesque is a style of strip tease that has been making a come-back. When it originally began in the United States back in the 1860’s, it was a theatrical performance with comedians and women who dressed a little less modest than the norm. Over time, to keep the audiences’ interest, the women became a focal point and they showed more and more skin. They wore exotic costumes with sequins, and feathers, sang songs, and danced to tease the audience.
There is a lot of sexy teasing not only from females. After all, the story would not be complete without a little romance. Eric Dane is Marcus, the sexy bartender who helps Christina get on her feet. He shows a little skin himself throughout the movie. My favorite is the Famous Amos chocolate chip cookie scene. I wish I could have one of those cookies. Christina takes a bite and falls in love.
This movie is great to watch for the sex appeal and the star powered performances of Cher and Christina Aguilera. It’s great to see Cher at 62 back in a movie and singing. She has had an amazing career which started back in the 1960’s before many of us were even born when she and Sonny Bono made the hit “I got You Babe” and now at 62 she is singing and performing in a sensual film like Burlesque. I only hope that I’m that sexy when I’m 62.
