Financial stability is an asset. Parents often wonder how to help their children choose a financial path that will meet their child’s needs. While each child is unique and will require individual thought, these tips can offer a starting point for parents.
1. Set an example.
The best way to influence any one, especially your child, is to prove the point with a good example. Parents can inspire their child in the area of finance just by being financially stable themselves. I’m reminded of a friend that had never obtained his high school diploma. His son struggled in high school and wanted to give up. My friend was financially stable, but he understood the great need for an education in today’s world. He went back to night school and graduated just to show his son how strongly he felt about the importance of education. His son knuckled down, and like his Dad, he did what it took to get that diploma. The example of a good work ethic and respect for the financial state of your house hold will inspire a child more than you realize.
2. Talk about the future.
Communication is the key to knowing what your child wants. A career should be chosen in part because it fits a personality. Start talking to your child early, even before they are old enough for work or higher education. The dreams will grow and change over time, but an informed parent that knows how to listen will be better equipped to help their child when the time comes. Talk to your child about what fields make what money. A serious discussion about good work ethics on several occasions throughout their life will encourage a mind set for success. Be available for talks about new ideas then when the time comes to choose a career; you will be on the top of your child’s list of advisers.
3. Help them research.
When your child shows interest in a career get serious about the research. High school graduates are a busy group. They might not have the time or resources to adequately gather the information necessary to make an informed choice. Parents can help research college requirements, state economical reports, and areas of availability in the field of interest. So much information is available online and with the employment agencies that some students never see because they simply don’t have enough time. Parents can sift through the information and bring the shorter, more time efficient, versions for their child to view. A good example of this is the Work Force
