They say I have sad eyes and I guess it's true
There was a time when I was too young
to understand or comprehend
that life was not as easy and perfect as it seemed
The black eyes on mom from time to time
were not by accident
That it wasn't okay for her boyfriends to visit my room at night
When a boy says he loves you
it's not always true
That he'll leave you and the baby he had born with you
Sad eyes from lessons learned late
They tell you study hard and someday...
They don't tell you that by the end of the day
raising your child alone after working two jobs
one just to pay day care
You'll have to stay up late to study to try to make the grade
That someday dream is a long way off you'll be exhausted
bruised and weary to the core
Why doesn't anyone every reassure you and tell you
It'll all be worth it and everything will be okay?

being good enough
Why is it that you can't love me
for who I am not for who or
