Trends in Data Encryption Software

Dell's recent rollout of the endpoint file level encryption software, has shifted focus on an emerging trend of data security, that of front-line solutions to data encryption.  As opposed to full disk encryption where solutions operate at the server level housed in the data center, endpoint encryption offers customised solutions to data security at endpoint levels of file and mobile devices.

Why? Increasing incidences of data breach from portable sources (laptops, PDAs, smartphones, flash media) have not only effected IT policies making it mandatory to add encryption to media containing confidential data, but also evolved initiatives towards secure encryption solutions of mobile and portable data that leave no chance for accidental data loss.

As risks from data loss intensify, encryption technology solutions are now assuming a more user provisioned and cross-platform enabled character that integrate with endpoint operations, as well as run on top of each other for a seamless data and voice encryption solution.

Increase in tele-working practices worldwide and the new ultra-wideband technology have increased the volume of sensitive data being handled. The problems of pre-deployment administrative controls and disk fragmentation typically associated with full disk encryption, are raising questions about the need for full data encryption or on-board encryption. Coupled with risks of data breach, firms are now wary of relying solely upon employee compliance.

This changing IT landscape has fostered a re-think in administrative policies, favouring solutions that prioritise what data gets encrypted.  And this is being addressed by endpoint security solutions offered by companies like Dell and Sophos, that can be fine-tuned according to the firm's data security policy and encryption strategy.

Such endpoint encryption software is also finding favour with small and mid-sized businesses looking at best-of-breed data encryption technology with managed services rather than a complete Suite technology option. With pre-installed applications in the future, we may well see a steep rise in data encryption usage by small to midsized firms in the future.

At the end of the day, as companies and Government agencies step back to re-work their data policy,  this trend of addressing the endpoint with a seamless file encryption at user level and greater administrative control, is perhaps going to change the way firms address their data security strategy.
