The quest to save Sir Franklin and acquire the Crystal of Compassion is another complex and interesting quest in the “Journey in Uma” expansion for “Darkstone.” Unlike in the original game, you’re required to do all the quests in order, as they build on one another; Saje, whom you rescued in the previous quest, becomes your guide for part of this quest.
Begin by visiting Bill’s Tavern, located in the southeast of the Land of Omar. Ilda, Sir Franklin’s maid, will give you the key to his house so you can check up on him. You also need to get the key to Saje’s Hideaway from Gawin.
Sir Franklin’s house is located in the Land of Marghor in the northwest. After defeating the monsters there, you can grab a book, “Vampire’s Memoirs,” located on a bookshelf in the second room to the left. Give the book to Ezasha in the Cursed Forest (Level 17), the entrance to which is north of Bill’s Tavern, and he’ll let you enter the house.
Kill the guard, Bernie, and look for a room with a coffin, which is the entrance to Level 18. It’s locked, but you can open it by clicking the unlit torch. While you’re scrambling to do this, you’ll be attacked by bats with an annoyingly high respawn rate. It might be best to cast Invisibility so they don’t bother you.
Once you’re on Level 18, look for Saje’s Hideaway, which you can open using Saje’s Key. Saje will ask you to find a horn, a diadem, and an anvil; we’ll get to that in a little while.
Continue to Level 19 and look for Nicodemus’ Chamber. Take the statue from the chest of drawers by the bed and place it on the shelf next to the bookcase (it’s a bit difficult to find). This will open a secret room with a chest containing Nicodemus’ Key. Use the key to free the prisoner in the Torture Chamber on the same level. He’ll turn into a spectre, whom you’ll need to kill to get Saje’s diadem and another one of Nicodemus’ keys.
Proceed to Level 20 and find Ezasha’s chamber. Ezasha will turn into a spectre and attack you (surprise!). Get the Vampire’s Key from the drawers next to his bed.
Find the Crypt on the same level. There are scorpions behind two doors; you’ll need to kill them to access the levers that will open Sir Franklin’s cell. You won’t be able to rescue him yet, since he’s under the vampire’s influence. Open Desmon the Vampire’s coffin. Ranged attacks are the key to defeating Desmon, since he’ll continually teleport out of your reach. When he dies, he’ll drop Saje’s horn.
Return to Marghor and use Nicodemus’ Key to open Nicodemus’ Father’s House, where you’ll find Saje’s anvil. Bring all three items to Saje in his hideaway in exchange for an Anti-Charm potion. Give the potion to Sir Franklin to free him from the vampire, then meet him back at his house to receive the Crystal of Compassion.
