Cincinnati is the 3rd largest city in Ohio. The large metropolitan city was listed in 2005 as the 20th most dangerous city in the U.S. While crime rates have dropped over the decade, the city still experiences relatively high crime rates. In most large metropolitan cities, issues associated with poverty exist on a large scale. These high statistics require more organizations that strive to tackle some of the social problems experienced by city residents. The success of these organizations is often largely dependent on volunteer involvement. Following is a list of places in Cincinnati, OH that need volunteer help to achieve their goals.
Volunteermatch.org ~ Volunteer Match is a one stop volunteer resource site dedicated to providing up to date opportunities for those looking to volunteer in their city. Organizations needing help post listings on the site with details and contact information. This is a great place to start for those looking to make a difference in Cincinnati.
Freestore Foodbank ~ Freestore Foodbank is located in Cincinnati, OH and is a part of the Feeding America initiative. The food bank holds several events each year to raise funds for the cause including a Rubber Duck Regatta and a Hunger Walk. Volunteer participation is crucial to the success of these events. The organization has many year round special projects including Cincinnati Cooks, a ten week program preparing individuals to be able to work in the food industry. One of the many other programs is a kids after school program where children receive hot meals. These meals are prepared by the members of the Cincinnati Cooks program. Visit Fsbmedia.org for volunteer opportunities.
ProKids CASA ~ CASA stands for court appointed special advocate. ProKids is a CASA organization in Cincinnati. CASA workers are trained volunteers who represent children in neglect and abuse court cases. Volunteering with CASA requires only a small time commitment but is a serious position, one that can be challenging but very rewarding. CASA volunteers establish a relationship with the child they are representing in the system. The worker then is able to make suggestions to the court system and other agencies on the best interest of the child. CASA workers are required to complete 30 hours of classroom training on topics such as understanding families, the law and court system, child abuse and neglect and placement safety. Those interested in learning more about a volunteer position with ProKids CASA should attend a Snapshot meeting. More information can be found at prokidscasa.org.
