For many, the joy of Christmas is all about giving instead of receiving. There are so many ways to give not only gifts of money but also the gift of our time. The Salvation Army is one organization that has many opportunities for those looking to give of their time and volunteer throughout the holiday season.
The Salvation is a universal movement of the Christian church with evangelical purposes. William Booth, a minister, is responsible for founding the Salvation Army in England in the late 1800s.The organization's commitment can be summed up in their slogan "Doing the most good".
Many people's understanding of the work done by The Salvation Army may be limited to the Salvation Army thrift stores. This is just a small part of the work done through the efforts of the organization along with thousands of volunteers. Below is an overview of a few programs that need volunteer help especially throughout the holiday season.
The Salvation Army Thrift Store ~ Located in cities all over the country, the Salvation Army Thrift Store utilizes volunteers to help in the operations of the stores. The profit recognized by these stores is used to support a large initiative of the Salvation Army, the Adult Rehabilitation Centers. These centers are programs where needy adults are provided with shelter and rehabilitation services. A specific focus is placed on spiritual growth as well as job placement services and counseling. Many of these adults are facing homelessness, drug abuse problems, legal problems, etc.
The Red Kettle Program ~ Garnishing the support of thousands of volunteers around the nation is the Red Kettle Program. Donations collected in the Red Kettles are used to buy toys and pack food boxes for needy families. This program is such a blessing for those who are struggling to make ends meet at Christmastime. Individuals wishing to volunteer as a kettle ringer can sign up on the Salvation Army website.
Angel Tree Foundation ~ The Angel Tree Foundation is another initiate that strives to deliver gifts to needy children. JCPenney partnered up with the Salvation Army this year. Many cities display Christmas trees in different department stores as well. On the trees you can select a child for whom you will purchase gifts. Along with each name will be a wish list and clothes sizes. Take time this season to add an Angel child to your shopping list. Check your local area's Salvation Army website for volunteer opportunities associated with the Angel Tree Foundation.
