Poetry: Bad friends

by Darren Horton

Created on: November 24, 2010   Last Updated: May 04, 2011

She hides behind a cold facade of poise,
Pretending grace and praise with self adjourned.
A polite refrain conceals an ugly noise,
Until the moment that your back is turned.

Unable to be true, she turns the truth.
Spurns honesty with casual slander.
Your silence on the fact provides the proof,
Conceited, she is more, another slighter.

To gain esteem she stokes up many fires,
And tattered reputations burn and smoke.
Cruel, with a smile, her words are spears;
Spite-tipped, and flung with Serengeti scope.

Be aware – friendship often isn’t so.
Beware the paradox of friend and foe.
