Christmastime should be a time of joy. A time to celebrate with family and loved ones. It can quickly become a time of worry and concern when we overspend. The trick is to be careful not to squander your money this holiday season. Here are some simple tips to help you keep the spending in check.

Budget -

Determine up front how much money you have to spend for the holidays. It is easy to get caught up with the excitement of the of the season and overspend. A consumer can become overwhelmed with the commercials on TV and displays in the store. Keep in mind your living expenses for the month as you decide what is a reasonable amount that you can use. Include in your budget the cost of not only gifts but entertaining. Once you have a budget in place remember not to go over that set amount no matter how much pressure you are under.

Think Before You Spend -

Remember that the purpose of your spending is to bring true joy to your loved ones and friends. Keep your purpose in mind and make sure that every dollar is working toward fulfilling that mission. Spend more time considering what would make the people on your Christmas list feel loved and less time running around the mall looking for a present. Often, the more thoughtful the gift, the less it costs. Can you make some of the gifts for your closest friends? Some of my most valuable possessions have been handcrafted by dear friends. Utilize your talents in gift giving.

Cost -

Once you have decided on the perfect gifts, you need to factor in the cost of each of them. You might have to adjust some of the items in order to stay within your budget. Know how much items cost before you go to the store. That way you will avoid paying extra for items that have been marked up.

Shop Around -

When you have a plan in place it becomes easier to shop around and find the best bargains. If you are shopping for a higher ticketed item make sure that the stores know that you are looking for the lowest price. They are often willing to mark down an item to ensure a sale.

Christmas should be a time of joy, not an event that you will be paying for in the coming year. By following these basic tips, you will find more joy in the holiday season.
