Making crafts with your toddler is a great way to get into the spirit of Christmas, but it can be difficult to find crafts that are at the right level. I have done all of these with my own toddler so can vouch for them being easy enough. A couple of important pointers; always provide non toxic glue, there are glue sticks available that change colour when used so little ones can see where the glue is going, or you may find it easier to put the glue in a jar and use a cheap paint brush. Never leave toddlers unattended - besides the obvious dangers of putting things in mouths, it's incredible how much mess can be made when backs are turned, however briefly. Other than that you will need: plenty of patience, the ability to tolerate a mess and, most importantly, a sense of fun.
~Glittered Pine Cones~
You will need: Pine Cones, Glue and glitter.
The first part of this craft involves going for a winters walk and collecting some pine cones. Once you're back home you may need to let the cones dry out before use. Spread newspapers out on the surface you intend to use. Glitter does get absolutely everywhere so think about where you want to do this. I prefer to use the floor. Put your choice of glitter in a bowl, I used three bowls, one for red glitter, one for silver and one with multi-coloured. First, cover the pine cones in glue and then dip them in a bowl and roll them around until covered. They'll need a few hours to dry. Give them a gentle shake to dislodge the loose glitter. These are great for decorating the Christmas tree, you can tie some coloured thread or ribbon, or use glitter pipe cleaners to attach them to the branches.
~Santa's Hat~
You will need: Red card or construction paper, glue, scissors, cotton wool balls
To begin with, cut out a red triangle to give to your toddler. If you don't have red card, you could always use white and let them colour it in red. Glue needs to be pasted along the wider end, then stick on a row or two of cotton wool balls, not forgetting to put one on the tip of the hat too. For the top a piece of tinsel could be used instead, or let them go mad adding bits of glitter, stickers and colour for a unique take on Santa's headwear.
~Christmas Candle~
You will need: a plain candle and strips of coloured beeswax (available from craft shops).
Tear off bits of beeswax and warm it between your hands. It is quite pliable and as it warms
