S Speaks
Hi! My name is S, and yes, I know it’s rude to boast,
but, of all the alphabet letters, I like myself the most.
I’m proud of myself for all I can do.
If you learn all my sounds, I’ll be proud of you too.
Sometimes I sound like a snake when it hisses -
like at the start of "smooches" and the middle of "kisses".
Can you hear me hiss twice in "sunkist" and "resist" ?
Listen to me hiss in "wrist", "fist" and "twist". Get the gist?
Other times I sound like the buzzing of bees.
Want to feel your teeth tickle? Say, “pickles”, say, “please.”
Say, “Balance the cheese with six peas on your nose,
and while you do that, step up-high on your toes.”
Now, isn’t that funny and clever of me –
that I can buzz like a bee, although "buzz" end in z ?
There are two other sounds that I can do, too.
When you hear what they are, they might surprise you.
Imagine a fly who’s not free like he was –
he cannot quite buzz, but he almost does.
The sound of a fly between a window and screen,
is sweet to the ears! I know - I shouldn’t be mean,
but flies aren’t very clean!
He can’t shout to get out. He can’t even yelp.
And so what if he did? Nobody would help!
I’m fond of that sound. It gives me such pleasure.
It’s the z-h sound as in "measure" and "treasure".
It sounds like a fly’s in your mouth when you say
some words like "division" you use everyday.
Think about the fly-in-your-mouth sound,
and you say, “I’ll watch television to hear the decision
about school closure. When it snows, I’ll wear
the right clothes for exposure to cold.”
The letter H loves me, but he hates my voice.
When he tells me to hush, I have no choice.
I get set to form "sift", but H turns it to "shift" !
I can’t seem to stop him. He’s pushy and swift.
When I want to form "has", H turns it to "hash".
When I’m set to form "as", H burns it to "ash"!
In spite of all this, H is still my best friend.
But I hate being bossed. I want it to end!
Sometimes I can’t wait to get my own way.
I look for a sound H is starting to say-
Like when he’s about to form "he" or "hunt".
I jump in front to change the word into "she" or "shunt".
I actually do like the gentle, soft sound.
It's like the pouring of sugar or the whisper of tissue.
It’s just that I hate being pushed around.
That is the issue! Listen to me do the soft sound
