A guide to Christmas superstitions

From decorating to eating, Christmas time has various superstitious rules to on what will bring good luck or bad luck as well as bringing good spirits or evil spirits to the home. Even Christmas etiquette is steeped in superstition. Many of the superstitions vary from culture to culture. The older the culture the stronger belief these people have in the superstitions surrounding Christmas.

Christmas Decorations

Some people believe it is bad luck to decorate for Christmas before Christmas Eve. It is said that any decorations that have lights should not be lit until after the first star appears in the sky at night.

If it is good luck you are looking for, it is said that you should leave a candle lit in the window throughout the entire night on Christmas Eve so that it will light the path to attract good luck to your entire household.

It is believed that Christmas decorations should stay up past New Year’s Eve to bring good fortune to your household. However, if you leave up the decorations past February 2nd, it is considered to attract bad luck.

Christmas Tree

It is said that the Christmas tree should not be brought into the house before December 24th and should only be decorated once the children have gone to bed. In Germany they have a superstitious tradition that a pickle shaped ornament should be hidden somewhere on the tree so that when the children awake the next morning they can search for it. Whoever finds this pickle shaped ornament will receive a special present.

Some people believe that if a Christmas tree goes undecorated then it will attract evil spirits and bring misfortune to your household. It was also once believed that this will cause the arrival of spring to be delayed.

It is also believed that a person should never throw a Christmas tree outside. All Christmas trees should be burned to keep away evil or mischievous spirits.

Christmas Etiquette

The first male visitor is of the holiday season is supposed to bring with them evergreens or coal. It is thought that if this is done, he will have luck with the women of the house and maybe even have the privilege of kissing one if not all of the women in the house. For added good luck, visiting men should be severed something to drink and eat. It is also considered lucky to give children who visit a lucky coin.
