Hikes in Wilson State Park, Michigan

by Joan H. Young

Created on: November 22, 2010

Wilson State Park is located just northwest of Harrison, Michigan in the central part of the state. The park is situated on Budd Lake, and has 36 acres of woodland and a sandy beach. Recommended activities are camping, swimming and fishing. There are no hiking trails in the park. Of course, one could always wander around and explore the area without walking established trails.

For those who prefer to hike on trails which are already laid out, there are several nearby choices, and the popular campground at Wilson State Park provides easy access, provided you have a car.

About 20 miles to the northeast is the Trout Lake Pathway, near Meredith. This system consists of two loops with a total of 2.7 miles. The loops encircle Trout and Hoister Lakes. The trail is also open to mountain bikers, and skiers in the winter. This pathway is completely flat with a natural surface.

To the southwest, about 15 miles, is Pike Lake State Park on M-115, with access to the Green Pine Lake Pathway. This set of three loops totals 8.5 miles, and is also open to hiking, bicycling, and skiing. The trail is anchored at the south near Mud Lake, and proceeds north to the small Green Pine and Pike Lakes. The terrain is flat to slightly rolling, with a natural trail surface.

North about 10 miles is the Lost Twin Lakes Pathway. Access is off County Road 400 (Reserve Road). This consists of one 3-mile loop. This area is more hilly than the previously mentioned trails, and although not challenging, would provide more interest for the hiker. The trail surface is natural, and there is enough elevation change to provide a few view points. Highlights are Lost Twin Lakes and a creek.

If one is willing to drive farther, there are several trails near Houghton and Higgins Lakes, and the extensive, 13-mile, Ogemaw Hills Pathway north of West Branch.

Camping is allowed in several locations along the Trout Lake and Green Pine Lake Pathways. However, for more amenities, camping at Wilson Hill State Park makes good sense. The three outlying locations could provide reasonable destinations for day hikes for families, or casual walkers.

Wilson Hill State Park is a good central location for a variety of outdoor recreation. It is across the street from the Clare County Fairgrounds. One can canoe the Muskegon River, ski at Snowsnake Mountain, and observe nature any time of the year.
