Thanksgiving Day: A reminder of why we are thankful

by Kim Miller

Created on: November 21, 2010

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the things that we are thankful for every day. It is a time to stop and think about the things that we appreciate the most. There are the traditional things like a roof over your head, a good job and healthy family. There are also things that we take for granted every day like freedoms that we have as citizens of this great country, America.

Everyone who has a roof over his or her head is thankful for that. It is wonderful to be able to go home at night and be warm and dry. To have a place to lay your head to rest and a place to eat dinner while giving thanks for the home you live in.

Those who have good jobs are thankful that they have a job so that they can afford a roof over their heads and food to eat.

Having a healthy family is something to be very thankful for. Many people lose loved ones or have sick family members. Daily life keeps people busy and they forget to remember that they are fortunate to have a healthy family. Those who do have ill family members can still be thankful for those who are healthy.

One of the biggest things to be thankful for is living in a country where we are completely free. What a wonderful thing to know that we can post what we are thankful for on places like Facebook, My Space or write articles on Helium. In America people can also state their grievances without fear of harm. In many countries people are not free to say how they feel, even in their own home.

It is important to be thankful for the freedom of religion. This gives everyone the right to believe in a religion or to have no religion at all. In some countries people must practice the religion that the rulers tell them to, or they face persecution. In America people can state their disagreement against a religious belief without fear of persecution by the government. People can practice a religious belief freely.

The simple freedoms in life that we take for granted are what we should be most thankful for. We are free to dress as we please, in some countries the people can not dress as they wish. Children in America are free to receive and education, yes they whine about going to school but they have the freedom to whine about it too. In some countries children are not allowed an education. In other counties they have to go to the school that the government sends them to and are not allowed to complain about if for fear of persecution. We are free to go where we wish on a daily basis, in some countries people are not allowed to just go to the store or take in a movie.

We have so much to be thankful for in America. We have the right to take care of our families and the right to practice how we believe freely. We should be thankful for these things on a daily basis. Thanksgiving gives us the chance to reflect and remember what we forget throughout the busy year.
