“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” If you agree with the wisdom of Dr. Seuss, then volunteering is a great way to show you care “a whole awful lot”. Every day there is a great need for volunteers but helping others on Thanksgiving or another holiday is a good starting point.
People often think of local missions or homeless shelters as a good spot to volunteer for the Thanksgiving holiday. Volunteers are usually needed at shelters. If you check with a shelter and they have enough volunteers, don't give up. According to United Way, the most most visible places needing help are sometimes inundated with volunteers on Thanksgiving. There are many other volunteer opportunities available.
Some of the best places to volunteer on Thanksgiving involve senior citizens. Some elderly people in special circumstances can feel isolated and lonely. Holidays often serve to make those feelings stronger. They may not have family in the area or can’t travel for health or economic reasons. Volunteering to help entertain, serve food or just visit with some older folks on Thanksgiving can be a rewarding experience for all involved. Check with nursing homes, churches or senior advocacy groups to find places to volunteer.
Food banks are another great place to volunteer on Thanksgiving Day. Some area food banks need volunteers to box up food for families to make Thanksgiving dinner as well as volunteers to deliver the boxes. If your local food bank is closed on Thanksgiving, keep in mind they are in constant need of volunteers to donate food, sort products, pack boxes and deliver goods. Conditions like the high rate of unemployment have caused severe shortages for food pantries as more people come to their doors to help feed their families.
There is a huge need for volunteers for health-related causes. Check with the American Cancer Society or an organization representing another group and find out how to help. You could volunteer transportation for family members to visit their loved one at a hospital. Families separated on Thanksgiving might find comfort in a traditional meal to give a sense of normalcy during a difficult time. Volunteer to make and serve a meal or buy a gift certificate to a family restaurant with a Thanksgiving buffet and deliver it to a family.
If you have the time, your investment in volunteer work can be beneficial for you as well as the cause you serve. There are many excellent places to volunteer on Thanksgiving. If you’re one of those special people who care “an awful lot,” then continue to make a difference by volunteering throughout the year. Those you help will be thankful for your kindness.
