When choosing a birthday gift for a best friend the cost is less important that the thought you put into deciding what to buy. It is not necessary to give a flashy expensive gift to a best friend each birthday, because a true friend does not value you for how much money you have or what you spend it on. You can show how well you know someone by giving an inexpensive birthday gift that is just perfect for that person. Even a handmade gift can become a treasured a a symbol of true friendship.

1. Gift ideas for an old friend

When you have been best friends with the same person for years you ought to know a lot about each other. You will know if your best friend is a big fan of a particular sport, a team supporter or follower of a star player. Your friend might admit to a having a secret passion for a movie star or being addicted to a regular TV show. You will also be aware of hobbies or special interests, which you may or may not share with your best friend.

If your friend already has a passion or a special interest, your inexpensive gift can fill a gap or add to a collection. You can do some research online to find sources, and have a look on eBay to see what is listed there.

You will know if there is a type of book your friend likes to read, and you are probably aware of which books your friend has read and what type of book would be most acceptable. The same applies to owning DVDs and to collecting memorabilia or liking a specific type of item. The more you know of your friend, the easier it is to find an inexpensive birthday gift that is sure to please.

2. Gift ideas for a new best friend

If you have not known your best friend for long, you could base your inexpensive birthday gift ideas on what first brought you together. You may have met at work, but chances are you got to know each other socially. If it was a shared interest that began your friendship, or you first met at a special event, this could give you an idea to buy something significant to that occasion, which is not necessarily an expensive item.

A personal gift will always be appreciated more than an expensive item that is of no interest or goes against personal taste. Think back to all the times you spent with your best friend, and you should get a good idea from your friend's reactions and confessions
