Success: Is it luck or attitude?

by Minor Magical

Created on: November 19, 2010

Success (which includes but is not restricted to financial accomplishment) is founded on the ease of access to opportunities.  Most people wake up at dawn and work till late into the night.  While at it, they hope and pray that their hard work will pay off and that they will achieve their goals.  But evidently, only very few live to enjoy the fruits of their labor.  These are the lucky few.  The only thing that they have, in common, with those who do not succeed is that they are in constant preparation for the unknown which is ultimate gratification or lack thereof.

Nothing captures the reality better than the popular maxim that “luck is when opportunity meets preparation”.  Of Course it goes without saying that opportunities are few and rare.  It is therefore not surprising that we tend to view opportunities as having been presented to us by chance.  Nonetheless we are motivated to keep on searching for opportunities by our desire to achieve certain goals.  Our level of preparedness to succeed is determined by the knowledge that we gain in the process and enhanced by firm in-borne characteristics that define our attitude towards success.

Those people whom we tend to label as successful seem not to understand what it means to be lucky.  They constantly cite meticulous planning as the reason why they have set themselves apart.  They develop strategies that are roadmaps to achieving their goals.  It is worth noting that to avoid pointless planning, goals must lead the plan.  Above all, these people are unbelievably optimistic that their plans will get them what they want.  What all this means is that they do not lay down and wait to be lucky.  Instead they seek opportunities.  But this explanation is very hard to accept although it sounds like a simplistic approach to success.  Searching for opportunities is ludicrous and akin to beating around the bush.  It is not a convincing formula for success.  If anything, gambling is also about seeking an opportunity to win.

Luck is a state of the mind.  In this view, it is a character trait that can as well be changed through social influence.  If someone claims to be lucky, then it is because they believe in luck.  On the other hand belief is an attitude.  We can not succeed in our endeavors if we don’t believe that our strategy will get us where we want to be.  It is a fact that
