The word Reiki means "Universal Life Force Energy". Reiki is a form of energy healing. Reiki uses Chi, or universal energy, to heal or strengthen an individual's energy system.
Reiki is only one method of channeling healing energy. Chi is the energy of all things and exists everywhere, so a person can use Chi without knowing Reiki.
The five Reiki symbols are derived from Sanskrit, an ancient language from which all other languages have evolved. The oldest writings in the world are Sanskrit. Sanskrit is said to be the language of the spirit world.
There are three Reiki symbols in Level II Reiki, and another in Level III or Master. A fifth Reiki symbol is used only in attunement ceremonies. Traditionally, the images of Reiki symbols are secret, revealed only to those attuned for Reiki Level II and higher. These days, pictures of Reiki symbols are readily available in books or on the internet.
Use of the Healing Symbols in Reiki
The Reiki healing practitioner draws the symbols in the air or on paper near the recipient of healing. Drawing the symbols creates a flow of Chi. Energy flows through and around the symbols, and manifests different characteristics for each symbol.
Stones with pre-carved symbols are not the traditional tools used by Reiki healers, since the act of individually drawing the symbols creates the essential energy flow in Reiki. In modern times, however, stones are commonly used.
Reiki healing is a hands-on practice. The practitioner puts his or her hands on the person to be healed, with intent for healing to occur. As Chi begins to flow, the healer does not interfere with or manipulate the flow of energy. The energy already knows what to do. The healer's job is to keep the energy channels open, be aware, and watch or listen for signs of what to do next.
