European honeymoons: Good or bad idea

by Caroline Sumner

Created on: November 18, 2010

Though a honeymoon is a deeply personal experience, and as such makes it difficult for one to deem a certain type of honeymoon as a "good" or "bad" idea, it is still possible to look at the pros and cons of a specific type of honeymoon. For couples considering a European honeymoon, there are a few very important things to keep in mind:

-The weather-
If you are getting married anywhere from late autumn to early spring, you may want to reconsider a European honeymoon as much of it will probably be quite cold. There are some exceptions, of course, depending on where you are planning to go, but if you have always dreamed of visiting Copenhagen, mid-February probably isn't the best time to go.

-The money-
Europe can be very expensive, especially if you are planning to travel during the high tourism season. Be sure that you can afford to book your trip early to get the best rates on hotels and airfare, and still have enough money to spend in order to get around and see the sights. Don't forget that you will need a passport - if it is your first time applying for one, they can cost up to nearly $300 depending on shipping.

-The tourism-
One thing to bear in mind is the pressure to be a tourist while on a trip over in Europe. After the whirlwind of the wedding, trying to take in some of those historic, beautiful places in Europe might be a bit too much to handle. Consider your energy level and the length of your trip before committing to the honeymoon in Europe.

-The languages-
A language barrier can sometimes be overcome by a few lessons and some universal sign language, and fortunately most major cities in Europe have a large number of people who speak fluent English. However, if you are planning to go and visit small towns in the countryside, you may wind up finding yourself lost in translation.

Though a European honeymoon is a great idea for a couple who loves culture, history, and the thrill of European travel, there are several things to consider before deciding to take this step. Be sure to take into account all of the above factors before booking your honeymoon in order to avoid a travel disaster. Make your honeymoon memorable by planning carefully - no matter where you go!
