Created on: November 18, 2010

As the capital of the United States of America, Washington D.C. is a city that many people from across America and the rest of the world want to visit. It is a reasonably large city with a proud history that dates back more than 200 years to the late 1700’s. As a capital city, D.C. as it is commonly called has a wide range of attractions to offer those that visit and while many of these will charge a fee there are others which are free or relatively inexpensive to take in. If you are working to a tight budget and want to take in some of the more affordable sights of Washington D.C. the following are some of the best to consider.

Lincoln Memorial

Abraham Lincoln is a name that most people in America and around the rest of the world are familiar with and he ranks as one of the most famous US Presidents in history. If you want to pay homage to the great man visiting the Lincoln Memorial is an option. This was constructed in the early 1900’s with a large statue of the great man being housed inside a building constructed in the style of a Greek temple. Both the building and the statue are impressive sights and the monument is open 24 hours a day and is free to enter. The memorial is located in West Potomac Park.

Arlington National Cemetery

This is one of the top attractions in Washington D.C. and it is a place to honor many of the soldiers that died in the defense of their country, as well as see the memorials and grave sites of some of the most famous names in American history. Some of the notable people who have been buried at Arlington National Cemetery include politicians Robert Kennedy and Edward Kennedy, Audie Murphy who was one of the most decorated soldiers of the Second World War as well as being a famous Hollywood actor and a number of five star generals. A map of the cemetery and information is available at the visitor center at the entrance to the cemetery and this can be a good way to start a visit. Walking around the grounds will enable you to see the resting place of a number of famous Americans and allow you to pay your respects.

Iwo Jima Memorial

This is probably one of the most famous war memorials around the world. Its official name is actually the Marine Corp War Memorial and it is dedicated to soldiers of the United States Marine Corp who have lost their life in the defense of the USA. It is a huge statue which was based on a famous photograph taken during the Second World War when US troops raised an American flag during the battle
