Memoirs: A magical week

by Christopher Alan Sweeney

Created on: November 17, 2010

The phone rang and I answered it.

“Christopher I’ve got a problem here.”

“What’s that?”

“You Know Who and I have had a falling out-as in it’s over man!”

“Geesh man! For the first time in twenty-five years some woman who finally means something to you and it’s over just like that. That’s bad. Tell me what’s up.”

“She won’t answer my calls. She won’t respond to my text messages and emails. I can’t understand it.”

“Bud you’ve been under a lot of stress. Did you just blow up on her?”

“Not really at first but in succeeding emails and texts yeah I guess so but I’ve been apologizing profusely to no effect.”

“I’ll be there in the morning.”

“I’ve got some single malt. I’ll be okay for now.”

“That’ll last the night. I’ll email you when to pick me up at the airport.”

“Hey why don’t we both go to Miami and just hang?”

“Sounds good. How ‘bout the Delano?”

“Nah I’m down on the Delano. I’ve been going to other places lately. I’ll check possibles.”

“Okay. Joes Stone Crab sounds like a good idea for dinner-you think?”

“For sure!”

I have no idea what I’m doing in Wilmington North Carolina except my sister-in-law suggested it after the last divorce. She said: “It has everything you like: beautiful beaches, sailing, fine restaurants, a real University and culture. You’ll love it.”

Oh yeah it’s here. I’ve been to recitals and museums. Cute and beautiful women from 45 to 60. But there’s no connection. I don’t have any friends. Haven’t really tried with the women either. I’ve had a hard time settling in because I never felt like I was really going to stay.

It’s okay. Downtown is 15 minutes away. The incredible Wrightsville beach is the same distance and the airport is 10 minutes. I love the surf but do I really care where I live? Not really.

I’ve raised five kids and been married three times. Wiped out twice. For me there’s nothing new under the sun. Experiences: I’ve had them all and paid for all of it.

We kicked around Miami Beach for a day or two and headed back-him to Atlanta and me to Wilmington. When we got off Delta at Atlanta he said: “Why don’t you stay
