Professional fire fighters are those drawn by the need to put their courage, values, principals, compassion and heartfelt love for their fellow men and women into play. They are those who deem saving lives the top priority over all others. Thinking not of themselves, fame nor glory, but the safety of others This is the most commendable thing a person could ever do. Professional fire fighters are rescuers who are extensively trained primarily to extinguish hazardous fires which threaten civilian and animal populations, personal property and to rescue people from burning vehicles, buildings and other life threatening situations.
Often times, they provide emergency medical services. From wildlife areas to urban areas, ships to majestic mountains, professional fire fighters have become ubiquitous around the world. Americans have long admired its professional fire fighters. Yet not until faced with the September 11th tragedy, did a plethora of people fully appreciate the dangers, heroism and sacrifices professional fire fighters make. They were almost invisible people to a myriad of people. But they soon became international symbols of supreme sacrifice, dedication and courage.
They even became models for toys. They were now seen in such a different light. Fire fighting which is now deemed a profession, began in Boston way back in 1678. Professional fire fighting in the late 19th century was said to be somewhat like indentured servitude. The fire fighters were on duty around the clock. They resided in firehouses 24 hours a day, they were only allowed to return home for an hour, for their 3 daily meals. Yet the job of a professional fire fighter was still a highly coveted job. A number of 20th century fires were extremely tragic milestones.
But these were milestones which aided in gaining more recognition for the true sacrifices professional fire fighters are prepared to make on a daily basis. These include the blaze aboard the General Slocum, which occurred in 1904, killing approximately 1,200 people. The San Francisco fire sets off in 1906 after an earthquake and the Hartford circus fire in 1944 which claimed 163 lives. Most of the deaths from the Hartford fire where of young children. But the fire which made the biggest impact was of the Triangle Shirtwaist in New York back in 1911. This caused the death of 146 garment workers and also inspired the fire service in New York.
This then led to America’s professional fire departments evolving into highly trained corps as we know them today. If terrorists should attempt to strike this country, if some catastrophe should threaten lives. You can bet your bottom dollar that professional fire fighters will right there on the front lines, risking their lives as they have always done. Our professional fire fighters all share a sense of duty to their country and fellow men and women. They should also share our utmost respect and admiration. Without them one can only imagine the extent of the horrors we could face.
