Side effects of Concerta

Created on: November 15, 2010

Concerta is an FDA approved medication prescribed for the treatment of ADHD(Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). It is used to treat the disorder in both children six years of age and older and  in adults. The medication may be prescribed for other conditions as well. As with all medications, Concerta does have possible side effects that you should be aware of. Some of the side effects are common, and others are more serious and may require medical attention if they are experienced.

Because Concerta is a central nervous system stimulant, it helps increase attention and decrease impulsiveness. It should not be taken by anyone with heart problems or high blood pressure. Those who have anxiety or agitation, tics, Tourettes Syndrome, or a family history of any of those should not take Concerta. It should also be avoided by persons who currently use an MAOI Inhibitor.

If you experience sucidial thoughts while taking Concerta, report this immediatley to your doctor. Depression is unlikely, but can occur while taking Concerta. Talk with your doctor about this if you suspect Concerta may be causing you to become depressed.

Common side effects of Concerta include headache, nausea, anxiety, weight loss, trouble sleeping or staying asleep, decreased appetite, dizziness, stomach ache, sweating, and dry mouth. These problems are usually not serious and are not bothersome to affect a person taking the medication. If, however, the problems do cause trouble in your daily life, discuss them with your doctor. Concerta may not be right for you, or medication dosage may need to be adjusted. Between 2% and 7% of users taking Concerta reported these side effects.

Serious side effects while taking Concetra include seizures, blurred vision, stunting of growth, in both height and weight, especially in children, and blockage of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, or large intestine. Though these serious side effects are rare and usually not experienced, it is important to seek medical help as soon as possible. These side effects can be life threatening or cause serious health problems.

Other side effects may occur while taking Concerta. If you notice unusual changes in behavior or experience any abnormal side effects, discuss those with your doctor as soon as possible. Only trained medical professional can evaluate your needs and side effects of the drug. Concerta is considered safe to take by most people, and is one of the preferred medications used to ADHD. It is well tolerated by most.
