Shopping in Mexico

I think shopping in Mexico is fun. I've never shopped in any of the border towns along the southern part of the U. S. But, I have shopped in Cozumel, Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, etc. Generally, these venues cater to tourists and are set up to make it easy to shop with U. S. currency. Normally, the exchange rate is a straight 10 Pesos per dollar. So, if the prices aren't already priced for U.S., the conversion is simple enough.

Most place don't mind a little negotiating and price their merchandise expected to lower the price. Don't be fooled. They are just as willing not to give you any reduction if you will pay full price. If you don't mind a little bit of bargaining, you can usually get the price down on a single item by 25-50%. On multiple items, it can drop more. If you go into a more modern type of store, they probably are using a fixed non-negotiable price. Just ask if they will take less.

Because of the large number of tourists, these places are relatively safe. Like anywhere else, it never pays to flash too much money too often. They are well-policed. As long as you shop in the daylight, you should never have a problem. I recommend that you ask for your change in U. S., or you will come home with money that's hard to spend here.
