There is a simple little formula that is used by concert promoters whether it is a small concert, or a large venue concert. This formula is important to anyone who desires to become a concert promoter. In itself, it seems easy, but it does take work, and money.
The first thing is to get an act that has a following of sorts. This requires homework on your part. You would need to see the act performing somewhere in concert and see what kind of draw they have( the more people they draw, the greater success for your concert).
When you find an act that has a pretty decent following, you need to decide on the location of the concert. You may want to start at smaller venues that seat maybe a couple of hundred. Of course you can always contact booking agents for major draws but this gets more detailed and you do need to get experience first, so a smaller concert with a more local act might be just the thing for you in getting your feet wet as a concert promoter.
When you have the act and the location, decide on a date. You want to book something far enough in advance to generate adequate publicity, but not too far into the future. Generally a couple of months prior would seem just about right.
So now you have the act, the location, and the date, now what can you do to ensure that the concert is a financial success for everyone?
Begin by negotiating the payment to the concert act based on ticket sales. This will minimize your losses if the event were to fail. Have the act sell their t-shirts, cd's, etc. with a percentage of the sales going to you( the concert promoter). Sell space inside the concert venue to local or major retailers, such as major pop or food companies, or liquor where applicable. Get flyers made up advertising the concert, and sell advertising space on them to local businesses. All this will generate funds for you in this and all future concerts. You can also get free radio advertisment from the radio stations by sending them free tickets to raffle off on the air. (Radio stations love to give things away). Finally, give the act themselves a certain amount of tickets to sell perhaps to friends and relatives.
Following the above steps will certainly give a boost to your first concert if a concert promoter is what you want to be!
