Soap operas are filled with very complex characters, and though viewers may find a character he or she can relate to, most of the characters are written for dramatic appeal. The stories and situations these characters get involved in are so farfetched sometimes that viewers can't help but be mesmerized by them. That is what makes soap operas so appealing. They are a wonderful escape from everyday life.
When viewers sit down to watch a soap, they will see about three stories happening in each episode. Watching them is like reading one chapter in three books each day, although there are times when the stories and/or the characters will overlap. But viewers can easily follow each character's storyline from one week to the next. What makes them different from books is that they never end. When one situation is finally resolved, another one starts.
If you're looking for a brief escape from your life and you would like to see people survive situations that are worse than your own, soap operas is the place to go.
