I have to say that this film choice was my husband's – he was obviously drawn to it by the word ‘porno’! I can’t say I was that keen on watching this 2008 film - directed and written by Kevin Smith, I imagined that it would be just a little too much for me, but I have to admit that (despite the language and crudeness) I actually DID enjoy the film. I know that there was barely a line in the film that didn’t contain an expletive, but somehow I leant to deal with that over the 100 or so minutes that the film lasted.
Zack and Miri are played by Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks in the film; they have been friends since they were very young children and they now platonically share a house; Miri doesn’t work at all, Zack earns a pittance in a coffee shop – they are broke! When Zack meets up with Bobby Long (Brandon Routh) at a high school reunion and realises that he has made a fortune being a gay porn star the $ signs light up in his head!
With the rent due, both the electric and water cut off in their property and no money in the bank the couple decide that they will make their fortune – by making a porn film, despite the fact that they have no money and no camera!
We then witness Zack and his motley crew led by fellow coffee shop worker Delaney (played by Craig Robinson) who is producer and casting director Delaney (Craig Robinson) who is extremely sensitive (hilariously so) to comments about his skin colour, as they carry out auditions for the film, which ends up being shot in the coffee shop after hours! With the aid of Deacon, a young lad who’s filming expertise is that he videos football games; Lester (played by Jason Mewes) who can perform at the drop of a hat and porn stars Bubbles and Stacey (Traci Lords and Katie Morgan) Zack and Miri decide that they would like to be part of the film themselves, and that they will need to have sex with each other. The couple don’t want to let this sex act "spoil the friendship”.
Will our couple go ahead with the act?
Will it spoil their relationship?
You will need to watch the film to find out.
This is an easy to watch, very humorous film, the two main characters work well together and there are plenty of funny moments from all the cast. This isn’t a film that takes a lot of brain power and will never be a ‘classic’, but it is good fun if you can disregard the lewdness and language!
The ending of this film is, I have to say, pretty predictable, but you do have an enjoyable time getting to it, with a whole host of weird and wonderful characters, the film is really funny from start to finish.
Don’t be put off by the title, this ISN’T a ‘porn film’ – but will it offend you? Well although there is some full frontal nudity (involving both sexes) there are no ‘sex scenes’ as such - just actual romance, unlike any porn film that you can imagine; but I do have to stress that there is a COLOSSAL amount of bad language, remember that you have been warned!
